A Study of Prognostic Factors on Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract
During the period of 10 years from January, 1082 to December, 1991, 143 cases of acute pancreatitis were analized in Kyung Hee University Hospital. Three groups according to severity were divided as group I : mild, group II: seriously ill, group
III:
death.
The mean age of patients was 43 years and male to female ratio was 2.3 : 1. The most common etiologic factor was alcohol in 41.9% of cases and alcohol was prevalent in man and biliary disease in wonan.
By Ranson's early prognostic signs, 45 per cent of patients with three or more postive signs were seriously ill, and additional 32 per cent died, 17 per cent of patients with less than three positive signs were seriously ill and additional 3 per
cent
died and its sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value and accuracy were 69.0%, 84.4%, 76.2%, 80.6% and 78.6% respectively. The factors related with prognosis were age(>55 yr), glucose(>200 mg/dl), calcium(<8.0 mg/dl),
albumin(<3.2g/dl), fever and epigastric distension. Although statistically nonsignificant alcohol was more etiologic factor in group II and III.
